Citi in Japan - History

Citi is today's pre-eminent financial services company, with some 200 million customer accounts in more than 140 countries. Our history dates back to the founding of Citibank in 1812. In Japan, our history dates back to when the International Banking Corporation (a predecessor to Citibank) opened its first branch in Yokohama in 1902.

1812	City Bank of New York established
1902	International Banking Corporation opened its first branch in Yokohama
1923	International Banking Corporation opened Tokyo Branch (temporarily closed in 1941, reopened in 1946)
1960	Diners Club issued first ever Japanese credit card, the Diners Club Card
1973	First National City Corporation listed on Tokyo Stock Exchange (delisted in 1998 with the merger between Citicorp and Travelers Group)
1974	First National City Corporation holding company changed its name to Citicorp
1977	Citibank N.A. launched Citicard Banking Centers, anchored by ATMs and the Citicard. The 24-hour ATMs are for the first time used for more than emergency cash Citi Cards Japan, Inc. established
1998	The Nikko Securities Co., Ltd. and Travelers Group agreed to a strategic capital alliance and the establishment of a joint venture Citicorp and Travelers Group merge to form Citigroup Inc.
1999	Nikko Salomon Smith Barney Limited incorporated
2000	Nikko Principal Investments Japan Ltd. established
2003	Nikko Salomon Smith Barney Limited renamed Nikko Citigroup Limited
2004	Nikko Citigroup Limited (formerly Nikko Salomon Smith Barney Limited) commenced operations as a locally incorporated company
2007	Nikko Cordial Corporation and Citigroup Inc. agreed to a comprehensive strategic alliance, comprised of a business and capital tie-up Citibank Japan Ltd. commences operations as a locally incorporated bank Citigroup Inc.'s shares listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange
2008	Nikko Cordial Corporation became a wholly owned subsidiary of Citigroup Inc., upon completion of share exchange Citigroup Japan Holdings Ltd. and Nikko Cordial Corporation merged to form Nikko Citi Holdings Inc.
2009	Citigroup Inc. announces agreement for sale of Nikko Cordial Securities Inc. to Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and the forging of alliance with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. Nikko Citi Holdings Inc. changes its name to Citigroup Japan Holdings Corp. Nikko Citigroup Limited changes its name to Citigroup Global Markets Japan Inc.
